The Last Caretaker Troubleshooting: Stuck, Crashes & Save Files
Early Access: official support updated September 8, 2026, and the Update 5.5 hotfix notes. Fixes that are not confirmed yet are marked.
Stuck? Use the official -ea menu
For a stuck character or boat, Channel37 provides an experimental Early Access menu enabled with -ea. Back up your saves before using it.
- In Steam, right-click The Last Caretaker and open Properties.
- Under Launch Options, enter -ea, then launch the game.
- Pause the game and open Early Access. Relocate character and Relocate boat are listed there.
Unlock skill items is also listed in this experimental menu.
Game crashes on startup or loading
Match the crash symptom to the official checks below. Start with the non-file checks; back up saves and the affected files before deleting anything.
- For older graphics cards, turn off ray tracing.
- If startup stops at the Channel37 splash screen, the support page identifies Intel AI Boost / NPU as a possible cause and advises disabling it.
- For error 0x11C7, update Windows first. The official support page also lists allowing the game folder through Windows Defender as an alternative; this is specific to that error.
- Back up your saves and copies of the affected files before trying the official cache/settings reset: delete Voyage_PCD3D_SM6.upipelinecache and GameUserSettings.ini. Their exact directories are not established in the reviewed notes; do not delete similarly named files elsewhere.
Update 5.5 Hotfix 1 addressed old attachment data in saves that could leave loading waiting indefinitely.
Where is the save file?
On Windows, the save folder is %localAppData%\Voyage\Saved\SaveGames\<Steam ID>. For Linux and Steam Deck, locate compatdata/1783560 in the Steam library, then the corresponding Voyage/Saved/SaveGames/<Steam ID> folder within it. The full Linux path is just below.

compatdata/1783560Folder to find inside the compatibility prefix
Voyage/Saved/SaveGames/<Steam ID>On Linux and Steam Deck the save folder sits inside the Proton prefix, so the full path from your Steam library is usually steamapps/compatdata/1783560/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Voyage/Saved/SaveGames/<Steam ID>. In Steam you can also right-click the game and choose Manage, then Browse local files, and go up to steamapps from there.
Linux / Steam Deck full path (from the Steam library)
steamapps/compatdata/1783560/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Voyage/Saved/SaveGames/<Steam ID>The game supports Steam Cloud, so Steam keeps a copy of your saves with your account and brings them back when you install the game on another PC.
Automatic backups are in the sibling SaveGameBackups folder. The game retains the latest 3 automatic backups per slot and provides 8 manual save slots, numbered 0–7.
Restore a backup by copying it into SaveGames and removing the date-and-time part of its filename. Preserve your existing files first.
- Back up the current save files before replacing or renaming anything.
- Find the backup you want in SaveGameBackups. Keep the original backup and copy it into SaveGames.
- Remove the date-and-time portion from the copied filename, leaving the rest of the filename intact.
Are there console commands?
Channel37 does not provide an official console-command list. Its support page instead documents the experimental -ea menu and says mods and third-party tools are not supported during Early Access.
Water pump and purifier not working
Connect the pump’s salt-water outlet to the purifier’s lower salt-water inlet, then send its fresh-water output through a water tank to the equipment that needs water.

- Purifier: lower salt-water inlet

Lazarus rack says No Power
A Lazarus rack showing No Power may lack a working fresh-water supply. For the known wiring issue, Channel37 advises disconnecting power, saving, restarting the game and then reconnecting. Two cables placed in the same connector port can also cause trouble.
Machines that stop by themselves
If a Distillation Tower runs briefly and stops, check that every product has somewhere to go. A full output can stop production.
Diesel Refinery consumes organic material and electricity to produce diesel. It is not an electricity generator. Portable Electric Generator and Large Electric Generator burn petrol to produce electricity.
