The Last Caretaker Repair Tool: Missing Tool Fix, Boat Repair and Healing
You start with the Repair Tool and cannot craft another one. If it is missing from your action bar, press T to open the Tools menu, right-click the wrench and give it a slot. Aim it at anything damaged, such as your boat or a beacon's communications array, to see the materials it needs, then carry those to repair it.
Repair Tool Missing? Get It Back
- Press T to open the Tools menu.
- Right-click the Repair Tool (the wrench).
- Pick a slot to put it back on your action bar.
If it is gone from your action bar, press T to open the Tools menu, right-click the Repair Tool and assign it to a slot.
Which tool is missing?
Repair Tool
You start the game with the Repair Tool. It cannot be dropped, and you cannot craft a new one.
Dismantle Tool
The Dismantle Tool unlocks at Tier 2 in the Skills menu and costs no skill points. You never build it: once unlocked it is in the Tools menu (T), not in the Fabricator or your inventory.
Torch and lights
The same Tools menu holds your dismantle tool and lights, so a missing dismantle tool or torch comes back the same way.
TideRipper
TideRipper hand jets work the same way: once unlocked, they are in the Tools menu, not the build menu.
Still not there? Fixes that are not confirmed yet are in the box below.
How to Repair Your Boat
The boat loses durability over time and when sharks or other attacks hit it.
Your boat's durability shows as a percentage beside a boat icon on the dashboard in the cab.
To repair it, equip the Repair Tool, look down at the deck and repair it with the materials it lists.
Parts of the boat, such as its tanks, engines, generators and machines, have their own durability. Repair anything that shows less than 100%.
Want a new colour scheme instead? See the paint and pigments guide. If the boat is stuck and will not move, try the fixes in the troubleshooting guide.
What the Repair Tool Fixes
It fixes the communications arrays at beacons, your boat, modules you have built such as wind turbines, and broken panels and machines around the world.
How Repairs Work
Hold the Repair Tool and aim at a damaged object to see the materials it still needs.
Carry those materials in your inventory, then repair. Keep a box with a stack of every common building material so you can bring it all at once.
Wind Turbines and Solar Panels
Wind turbines wear down and need repairs from time to time, the Tier 1 turbine fastest; solar panels rarely need any. Repairs stay cheap if you fix things before they are badly damaged.
Plan how many generators you need in the Power Grid Calculator, and see where to put them in the power grid guide.
How to Heal Yourself
Heal Stations restore Vitality. Your boat has one beside its Backup Station, and others sit in places such as air pockets at deep dive sites and a room on the Lazarus Complex roof.
Plug into a Heal Station with its cable to heal.
Away from a Heal Station, a Charge Injector, unlocked at Tier 4, turns battery power into Vitality.
Each level of the Field Medic enhancer makes electricity and Vitality transfer 2.5% faster.
Not confirmed yet
If the Repair Tool is not in the Tools menu either, loading an autosave from before it disappeared may bring it back; a save that began in the demo may need a new game.
Materials in storage close by may also count for a repair.
Light damage to the boat may only need Iron.
The wiki says you can also see the boat's durability while holding the Repair Tool.
The wiki says the boat's top speed drops with its durability and comes back when you repair it.
The wiki says the boat may sink at 0% durability, and recommends loading a backup if it does.
Parts of the boat can catch fire below 20% durability.
A FELIS can be repaired only while it is damaged, not after it is destroyed, and a repair can need another F.E.L.I.S shell.
Staying plugged into the boat's Heal Station during leech attacks may heal you faster than they hurt.
If a tool is not in the Tools menu either, check that no filter is switched on in the Tools or build menu.
Keeping the boat above about 80% durability may avoid odd behaviour when it is damaged.
A damaged fuel tank may not fill to the top until it is repaired.
Repair and Healing FAQ
Where is the Repair Tool in The Last Caretaker?
You start with it. If it is not on your action bar, press T to open the Tools menu, right-click the Repair Tool and assign it to a slot.
Can you craft a new Repair Tool?
No. You start with one and it cannot be dropped, so if it is missing from your action bar, look in the Tools menu (T).
How do you get the dismantle tool?
Unlock it at Tier 2 in the Skills menu; it costs no skill points. You never build it: once unlocked it is in the Tools menu (T). Right-click it there and assign it to a slot on your action bar.
How do you repair your boat?
Equip the Repair Tool, look down at the deck to see the materials it needs, and repair it with those in your inventory. Its durability shows beside the boat icon on the cab dashboard. Tanks, engines, generators and machines have their own durability, so repair anything under 100%.
What materials do repairs need?
It depends on the object and how damaged it is. Aim the Repair Tool at it to see the list; many players carry a box with some of every common building material.
How do you heal yourself?
Plug into a Heal Station, such as the one on your boat, or use a Charge Injector to turn battery power into Vitality.
Do wind turbines and solar panels need repairs?
Wind turbines wear down and need repairs from time to time, the Tier 1 turbine fastest. Solar panels rarely do.
