The Last Caretaker Security Level: How to Raise It and Open Locked Doors
Your security level goes up by one for every 5 character levels: security level 2 at level 10, 3 at level 15 and 4 at level 20. A door with a shield and a number needs that security level, and you can check yours on the badge on your robot's left shoulder in the Inventory screen. Doors that need power or an authorization have other requirements.

Read the Door: Four Kinds of Locks
Shield with a number: security level
A door with a small shield icon and a number on its frame needs that security level. Multiply the number by 5 to get the character level you need.
Lightning bolt: power
A door that needs power has a small lightning-bolt display on its frame, which turns green once the door has power.
Authorization panel: story
A door that needs an authorization has a panel beside it that says so, such as "Authorization required". Those doors open as the story moves on, not when you level up.
Terminal nearby: access code
Some doors open with an access code that you download from a nearby terminal.
One story lock players often meet: the Council of Humanity door needs an orbital representative, a human you have launched into space. See the committee guide. Another is the door marked "Moses Authorization Required" at the Last Listener Station; see how to get Moses authorization.
Doors Players Ask About
Check the shield number on the door against your own badge before you make the trip. The interactive map gives coordinates for Navigation Beacon 49, Black Vein Station and Lazarus Complex. Details about specific doors are below; none of them are confirmed yet.
Not confirmed yet
The door in the basement of Navigation Beacon 49 may need security level 3; it has also been remembered as level 4.
The locked doors at Black Vein Station, the oil rig, may need security level 3, and the outlet at the door needs electricity.
Some doors at Lazarus Complex may need security level 4.
A security level 2 door in the Hall of Humanity opened at about character level 11 or 12.
A message may appear when your security level goes up.
Security was once thought to come from PECO stations; later answers tie it to character level.
Security Level FAQ
What level do you need for security level 3?
Character level 15. Security level goes up by one for every 5 character levels: 2 at level 10, 3 at level 15 and 4 at level 20.
How do you open a level 3 door?
Reach character level 15. A door with a shield showing 3 needs security level 3, and your security level rises by one every 5 character levels. If you are level 15 or higher and it stays shut, check that it has power and that it does not ask for an authorization instead.
How do you increase your security level?
Level up your character. You get one more security level for every 5 character levels, so the next one comes at the next multiple of 5.
How do you check your security level?
Open the Inventory screen and look at the shield badge on your robot's left shoulder. The number on it is your security level.
What does the shield with a number on a door mean?
It is the security level the door needs. Multiply the number by 5 to get the character level you need, so a shield 3 door opens at level 15.
Why won't a door open even though it has power?
Look for a second requirement. A shield with a number means a security level, a panel that says an authorization is required means the story has to move on first, and some doors need an access code from a nearby terminal.
