How to Unlock (Ugly Work)
Find and scan both missing Recovery Grinder blueprints. The Salvage Gyro is needed to reach the blueprint locations. Every other blueprint you scan is on the blueprint locations checklist.
Eternal Flame — Southern silo
Find and scan the Recovery Grinder blueprint in the MCV-12 Eternal Flame silo.
Map coordinates 89, 47, about 5.3 km south-southeast of Lazarus Complex.
Dead Breath — Northern silo
Find and scan the Recovery Grinder blueprint in the MCV-17 Dead Breath silo.
Map coordinates 74, -74, about 7.2 km north of Lazarus Complex.
See both silos on the interactive map
Scanning both blueprints unlocks the Recovery Grinder. Both locations belong to the same quest.
Getting the Gyro down a silo is the hard part: the Ugly Work walkthrough covers what to bring, descent tips and what to do if you crash.
Recipe & Requirements
- Alloy Frame ×3
- Connector Ports ×2
- Filtering System ×1
- Cooling Radiator ×1
- Reactive Core ×1
Supply electricity and connect an oil tank to collect the output.
Unlock at skill level 23 for 4 skill points after completing Ugly Work. The wiki and the in-game skill panel (June 2026) agree; reviewed 2026-10-05. This has not been re-checked since Update 5.5.
Update 5.5 changed the Reactive Core recipe to use Quantum Crystal instead of Plasma Gel. See the Update 5.5 notes before gathering materials for the core.
The in-game machine card lists maximum throughput as Electricity 100.0 kWh, input as Physical matter 36.0 kg/h, and output as Oil 36000 L. These labels also match a post-Update 5.5 screen; reviewed 2026-10-06.
The game does not explain how these displayed quantities relate to one another. They are not used to calculate oil yield, power use, or processing time.
Not confirmed yet
- The wiki alone reports standby power of 200 W.
- Construction time 0:54 and energy 2 Wh have also been shown.
These are excluded from the planner.
Stainless Steel
Craft each item in the Fabricator using Iron ×1, Oil 10 L and Electricity 10 Wh. Connect an oil supply to the Fabricator before crafting.
This recipe matches the wiki and the game after Update 5.5 (September 20, 2026). The building-menu recipe for Eden Frame - Small uses 50 Stainless Steel; another crafting interface shows 10, with the station still unidentified. That alternative is disputed: Not confirmed yet. See the Project Eden recipe comparison.
Not confirmed yet: a 3-second crafting time and the labels Rare and Item / Material. These details do not affect the planner.
What to Grind to Get Each Material
Need a material you are short of? Grind one of these. Every row also makes oil; amounts are in the oil yield table below.
| To get | Grind |
|---|---|
| Aluminum | Copper |
| Copper | Iron, Aluminum or Gold |
| Glass | Silicone |
| Gold | Iron |
| Iron | Copper or Titanium |
| Neutronium | Titanium |
| Plastic | Carbon Fiber, Fabric or Polyurethane |
| Polyurethane | Glass or Fabric |
| Silicone | Glass |
| Titanium | Aluminum or Gold |
Not confirmed yet: Metal items such as scrap, steel beams, shelves and plates go into the grinder as Iron, which is why they come out as Copper and Gold.
Oil Yield Table
Yield depends on the input material. These 12 yields are from Update 5 and match the wiki, reviewed 2026-10-05; they still need a current-version check.
| Input material | Oil yield | Byproducts |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 20 L per 100 | Iron, Aluminum |
| Iron | 30 L per 100 | Copper, Gold |
| Glass | 10 L per 100 | Silicone, Polyurethane |
| Plastic | 15 L per 100 | None |
| Carbon Fiber | 10 L per 100 | Plastic |
| Rubber | 20 L per 100 | None |
| Fabric | 10 L per 100 | Plastic, Polyurethane |
| Silicone | 30 L per 100 | Glass |
| Polyurethane | 20 L per 100 | Plastic |
| Aluminum | 20 L per 100 | Copper, Titanium |

Recovery Grinder FAQ
What does the Recovery Grinder produce?
It converts surplus materials into oil and other materials, with material losses. The outputs depend on the material you grind.
Where are the Ugly Work blueprints?
Scan both missing Recovery Grinder blueprints, one in each silo: Eternal Flame (MCV-12 Eternal Flame) at map coordinates 89, 47, about 5.3 km south-southeast of Lazarus Complex; Dead Breath (MCV-17 Dead Breath) at map coordinates 74, -74, about 7.2 km north of Lazarus Complex. You need the Salvage Gyro to reach them. Scanning both unlocks the machine.
What is the Recovery Grinder recipe?
Alloy Frame ×3, Connector Ports ×2, Filtering System ×1, Cooling Radiator ×1, Reactive Core ×1.
What does the Grinder need to run?
Supply electricity and connect an oil tank to collect the output.
How do I make Stainless Steel?
Use the Fabricator with Iron ×1, Oil 10 L and Electricity 10 Wh per item. Connect an oil supply to the Fabricator before crafting.
Why does my Recovery Grinder turn metal into Copper and Gold?
That is what Iron gives: 100 Iron makes 30 L of oil plus Copper and Gold. The grinder is for surplus you want to turn into oil and other materials, not for getting the same material back.
Version Limits
Reviewed 2026-10-05. Grinder details are from Update 5 and not yet re-checked since Update 5.5; the Stainless Steel recipe is from after Update 5.5. Details that are not confirmed yet are labeled above. The Reactive Core change is from the official Update 5.5 announcement.
