The Last Caretaker Tips and Tricks
Check unlocks before building, preview the power cost before dismantling, and keep a Lazarus Rack supplied before collecting a Human Seed. These short tips follow your progress from the first upgrades to growing humans, with a separate section for the Update 6 beta.
Game version: Update 5.5 / Early Access 0.8.5 and older dated sources; Update 6 public beta tips are labeled separately. Each tip keeps its original verification date.

Starting out: unlocks and useful upgrades
Check your level before hunting for a blueprint
Each character level opens the skill tier with the same number. Look up the blueprint in the Skill Planner before planning what to build next.
Find blueprint unlocks →Compare battery capacity and power use
Battery increases stored energy, while Power Management lowers your base electricity consumption. Compare both in the Enhancer Planner before spending your enhancement points.
Compare enhancement levels →Read the dismantle preview first
Before dismantling, check the tooltip for electricity cost, time, durability and the items you will receive. Use that preview to choose which objects to process with your remaining power.
Read the dismantle guide →Build a supply: power, fuel and materials
Take scraps to a Recycler
Dismantling gives you scraps; a Recycler turns those scraps into materials. Check the material guide for the next step instead of treating every scrap type as a finished crafting material.
Find material sources →Match the generator to its fuel
Portable Electric Generator and Large Electric Generator use petrol (gasoline). Check the fuel type before planning barrels or bulk storage.
Plan fuel storage →Plan for lower solar generation at night
Solar generation is weaker at night. Prepare your power supply for that period before relying on it for human cultivation.
Check the power setup →While exploring: collect materials and manage the load
Collect the Recycler output
Picking up materials from the Recycler gives XP. Include collecting the output in your recycling routine as you work toward the next unlock tier.
See XP sources and unlocks →Use Haul Mastery for carrying capacity
Haul Mastery increases how much you can carry. Compare its effect in the Enhancer Planner when planning a materials run.
Plan carrying capacity →Before growing a human: prepare the rack
Prepare power and fresh water before the seed run
A seed in a Pod on a powered rack supplied with fresh water has its countdown stopped. Keep both supplies running, and check your chosen food totals in the Human Calculator.
Calculate human food stats →Return a seed to cold storage if you need to pause
Returning a seed to a cryogenic storage vault pauses its countdown. If you are not ready to use it, check the storage and seed guidance before continuing.
Check seed handling and human recipes →Update 6: prepare for North Bastion
These tips were recorded in the Update 6 public beta before the October 19 release. Check the Update 6 page for what the release changed.
Connect heat through steam
In the Update 6 public beta, a Boiler produced steam and connected heaters turned it into heat. Read the heating guide before planning the cold-region setup.
See beta heating sources →Check the portable heater option
The FLO TH-5 Local Heater could be carried on your back in the Update 6 public beta. Its recipe and fuel numbers remain unverified, so check your own game before planning supplies.
Check the portable heater evidence →Tips and Tricks FAQ
What are some tips for playing The Last Caretaker?
Check blueprint unlocks by level, read the dismantle preview and recycle scraps into materials. Before collecting a Human Seed, prepare a rack with power and fresh water. The tips above link to the tools and dated sources for each step.
What are the best skills to learn in The Last Caretaker?
Choose upgrades for the problem you need to solve: Battery adds capacity, Power Management lowers base electricity use, Haul Mastery adds carrying capacity and Scrapper reduces dismantling time and electricity use. The Enhancer Planner lets you compare these effects; there is no single best order for every task.
How can I get XP while gathering materials?
Pick up the materials produced by the Recycler to gain XP. Recycling and collecting its output lets you gather crafting materials while progressing toward another unlock tier.
Should I prepare the Lazarus Rack before collecting a Human Seed?
Yes: prepare power and fresh water first. A seed in a Pod on a rack with both supplies has its countdown stopped; keep the supplies running. Returning a seed to cryogenic storage also pauses the countdown.
For the upgrade comparisons above, see the Enhancer Planner and Scrapper details. Claims that are not confirmed yet and disputed numeric recipes are left out of these tips.
